Fragrance load is the percentage of fragrance oil relative to the weight of your wax. Getting it right is crucial โ too little and your candle won't have scent throw, too much and you risk sweating, poor burning, and wasted fragrance oil.
The Formula
Fragrance Oil (oz) = Wax Weight (oz) ร (Fragrance % รท 100)
For example, 6 oz of wax at 10% fragrance load = 6 ร 0.10 = 0.6 oz of fragrance oil.
Recommended Fragrance Loads by Wax Type
- Soy Wax (464): 8-12% โ Most popular container wax. 10% is the sweet spot for strong scent throw.
- Coconut Soy Blend: 8-12% โ Great hot and cold throw. Start at 10%.
- Paraffin: 8-12% โ Holds fragrance well. Can push to 12% for strong scents.
- Beeswax: 3-6% โ Natural wax that doesn't hold as much fragrance. Keep it subtle.
- Coconut Wax: 6-10% โ Premium wax with excellent scent throw even at lower loads.
Tips for Better Scent Throw
- Add fragrance at the right temperature โ Usually 185ยฐF for soy. Check your wax manufacturer's guidelines.
- Stir for 2 full minutes โ Proper mixing is key to binding fragrance to wax.
- Let candles cure โ Soy candles need 1-2 weeks to develop full scent throw.
- Test different percentages โ Start at the recommended load and adjust up/down by 1% at a time.
