How to Calculate Wax and Fragrance for Wax Melts

Wax melts are one of the easiest and most profitable products for candle makers. They use the same supplies as candles but require no wicks, and customers love them for their strong scent throw.

Wax Melt Sizes

  • Standard 6-cavity clamshell: ~3 oz total (0.5 oz per cavity). The most popular format.
  • 10-cavity clamshell: ~3 oz total (0.3 oz per cavity). More pieces, same weight.
  • Snap bars: 2-3 oz total. Trendy format that customers break apart.
  • Individual tarts: 1 oz each. Great for sample packs.

Fragrance Load for Wax Melts

Wax melts can handle a slightly higher fragrance load than candles since there's no flame involved. Most makers use 10-12% for strong scent throw. Some push to 15% for "triple scented" melts, but this can cause sweating and isn't necessary for most waxes.

Best Wax for Wax Melts

  • Soy wax (464): Great all-around choice. Smooth tops, good scent throw.
  • Paraffin blends: Strongest scent throw. More affordable than soy.
  • Coconut soy blend: Premium look and feel. Excellent scent throw.

Pricing Wax Melts

Wax melts typically sell for $5-8 per clamshell at craft fairs and$6-10 online. With a COGS of $1-2 per clamshell, margins are excellent — often 70%+ at retail.
