How to Price Candles for Profit

Pricing is the most important decision in your candle business. Price too low and you work for free. Price too high and you don't sell. The key is understanding your true costs and setting prices that work for every sales channel.

The Pricing Formula

Retail Price = COGS ÷ (1 - Target Margin)

For example, if your candle costs $5.50 to make and you want a 55% margin: $5.50 ÷ (1 - 0.55) = $5.50 ÷ 0.45 = $12.22

Pricing for Different Channels

  • Direct/Website: Full retail price. You keep the most profit here.
  • Craft fairs: Retail price, but factor in booth fees. A $150 booth fee spread across 40 candles adds $3.75 per candle.
  • Etsy: Retail price + shipping. Remember Etsy takes ~6.5% in fees.
  • Wholesale: 50% off retail. Your margin must be high enough that wholesale is still profitable — aim for 67% retail margin so you keep 34% at wholesale.

Common Pricing Mistakes

  • Not paying yourself — Your labor is a cost. Include it in COGS.
  • Ignoring platform fees — Etsy, Shopify, and payment processors take 3-7%.
  • Pricing based on competitors — Your costs are different. Price based on YOUR numbers.
  • Forgetting shipping — Candles are heavy. Shipping a single candle costs $5-8.
