Candle Label Requirements: What You Need to Know

If you sell candles in the United States, your labels must comply with ASTM F2058, the standard specification for candle fire safety labeling. This isn't optional β€” the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) enforces these requirements.

What Must Be on a Candle Label?

  • Fire safety warnings β€” The label must include warnings about keeping the candle away from flammable materials, children, and pets.
  • Net weight β€” Required by the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act (FPLA) for consumer products.
  • Manufacturer information β€” Your brand name or company name.
  • Material content β€” Many states require disclosing the wax type (soy, paraffin, etc.).

ASTM F2058 Warning Requirements

The ASTM standard specifies that candle labels must include specific fire safety messages. The exact wording can vary, but the key warnings include:

  • Burn within sight and keep away from flammable items
  • Keep away from children and pets
  • Trim the wick before each use
  • Don't burn for more than 4 hours continuously
  • Use a heat-resistant surface
  • Stop using when Β½ inch of wax remains

Where Should Warning Labels Go?

Warning labels should be placed on the bottom of the candle container or on the packaging where they're clearly visible before use. Many candle makers use the bottom label for warnings and a front label for branding.
