One of the most common questions new candle makers ask is "how much wax do I need?" The answer depends on your container size, wax type, and how full you want to fill your jars.
The Simple Rule of Thumb
A quick estimate: 1 pound of wax fills about two 8 oz candles (by volume). But this varies by wax type — soy wax is lighter than paraffin, so you'll need slightly less weight of soy to fill the same container.
Why Container Volume Matters
Candle containers are usually labeled by their total capacity in fluid ounces. But wax is measured by weight (ounces). These are not the same thing. An 8 fl oz jar doesn't hold 8 oz of wax by weight — it typically holds about 6-6.5 oz of soy wax.
That's why this calculator converts between volume and weight using actual wax densities, giving you the precise weight you need.
Tips for Measuring Your Containers
- Measure the inside diameter — not the outside of the jar. The glass wall thickness affects your actual fill volume.
- Leave 0.5" at the top — Don't fill to the brim. Leave room for the flame and prevent the glass from overheating.
- Account for wax shrinkage — Soy wax shrinks when cooling. You may need a second pour (or use a heat gun) to fix sinkholes.
- Add 10% extra for waste — Wax sticks to pouring pots, some gets left behind. Order slightly more than you calculate.

Here's a quick reference for soy wax (464) at 90% fill:
- 4 oz tin: ~3 oz wax
- 6 oz jar: ~4.5 oz wax
- 8 oz jar: ~6 oz wax
- 12 oz jar: ~9 oz wax
- 16 oz jar: ~12 oz wax
How Many Candles Per Pound of Wax?
This depends on your container size. With 1 lb (16 oz) of soy wax:
- 4 oz candles: ~5 candles per pound
- 8 oz candles: ~2-3 candles per pound
- 12 oz candles: ~1-2 candles per pound
- 16 oz candles: ~1 candle per pound
Remember to subtract fragrance oil weight from the wax amount. At a typical 6-10% fragrance load, that portion of your fill weight is fragrance oil, not wax.
